Read Should Libraries Stick to Books? by Paul Moloney in the Toronto Star.
Mike Del Grande, the Budget Chief, and Ward 39 Councillor for Scarborough-Agincourt, questions the number of multi-lingual items carried by the Toronto Public Library.
Says Del Grande:
“Are we an international library? What proportion of our budget should go for non-English movies and books, etc.? The argument would be made this is what makes the city great, but I would dare say our common language is English.”
And for our library users learning English?
“We’re spending tons of money for ESL. Should we not have a discussion of how much of the library budget should go for non-English resources?
How can an elected official be so out of touch with Toronto and its citizens?
Please make sure you, your friends, and family call their City Councillor and let them know that the citizens of Toronto intend to fight for their public library.
The next public meeting of the Toronto Public Library Board is on Monday, December 12 at 6 pm at the Toronto Reference Library.
